The Board Leadership Academy wrapped up its third and final session last Wednesday with workshops on social media and fundraising.
HBH wishes you all of you the best of luck in your important role as a leader in moving your organization forward.
Also, several participants asked for more information on blogging, including a sample photo release form for models and other best practice tips for using photos and video in social media. We will be preparing a blog on this topic in the coming days, so check back soon for more info if this is a topic of interest for you.
Thank you for your involvement in BLA. You have much to celebrate!

What does your party dance look like?
You know the party dance. The one you do in your office when you get the news that you’ve been awarded a large (or unlikely) grant award or receive a major gift you’ve been waiting for from a donor that’s been hard to get close to. You might do the hokey-pokey. Or maybe the cha-cha. If you’re shy, you might wait until rush hour when you’re alone in your car. Newsflash: everyone can see you!
There can never be enough moments like these around the office. But with donors and grantmakers becoming increasingly weary of fundraising appeals and untargeted proposals, it’s important that you have a clearly defined fundraising plan that’s guided by donor-centered strategic thinking. Or you’ll have fewer and fewer reasons to dance. And that extends into your grant efforts, too. You have to find the intersection of where your program meets a foundation’s philanthropic priorities and OWN it.
Tomorrow is the last day to register for HBH’s fundraising and grant writing workshops on May 3 at the Initiative Foundation where we will share best practices and innovative strategies for acquiring and keeping your donors, as well as tips for sharpening your grants pencil.
The morning session with Bob, Fund Development for Grassroots Nonprofits, will help you to identify new donor prospects, re-frame your thinking about how to relate to donors and provide valuable insight on how to engage your board in fundraising (it is possible!). The afternoon session with Dianne and Katrina, Sharpening your Grant Writing Skills, will teach you where and how to find the right funder for your program, how to build credibility with program officers and how to be more strategic in targeting your grants and developing key messages for your proposals.
Though it might look funny, how you celebrate your achievements isn’t important. What is important is that the work you are doing contributes to the greater GOOD. The better you do, the bigger your impact will be. You don’t have to settle for the tiniest pebble. You can achieve challenging goals. But first, you have to set them.
Register online today to reserve your seat on May 3.
See you on the dance floor!

Interested in how to leverage technology for your nonprofit?

Self-professed nerds and closet computer geeks take heed!
The annual Technology and Communications Conference hosted by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, E-Strategy in an i-World , is set for February 23 at the Hyatt Regency in Minneapolis. This one day event will “delve in to how to design the right eStrategy in today’s iWorld to build an engaged audience for your nonprofit. At the conference, you’ll have no shortage of opportunities to learn, network, share, and have some fun. You will walk away with real tools and ideas to keep your nonprofit nimble and resilient moving forward.”
Tight budget? MCN Members who register by January 21 receive the early bird rate of $149. They are also offering team discounts again this year (register 3 and the 4th attendee is free!) Still not in your budget? MCN is also offering scholarships to representatives from nonprofits with budgets under $750,000. The deadline to apply for scholarships is February 4, so don’t delay!
Do you look up to a nonprofit that is innovative and effective in its use of technology and communications? Nominate your colleagues for a Dot.Org Award!
And don’t miss the afternoon breakout session, Keeping your donors: a high-touch approach in a high-tech world where HBH’s nerd-in-residence (me) and my colleagues Sarah Libbon and Dayton Hultgren will offer easy, thoughtful ways to keep donors engaged through meaningful communications and a personalized approach to gift recognition.
And don’t think you need to be Gidget the Gazmo Guy to benefit from attending. The conference boasts a wide range of breakout sessions for people of all abilities and backgrounds (a Help Desk will even offer conference-goers the ability to get their burning technology questions answered by experts).
WiFi will be available throughout the conference so charge up your i-Pad, smart phone and/or laptop and get registered! We’re looking forward to an extra geeky good time.
