New Research from Penelope Burk
I just read an interesting blog by one of my favorite experts in the field of philanthropy, Penelope Burk, titled “Brace Yourself for Happiness.” She cites the results of her recent survey: Among 22,000 donors surveyed last month about their philanthropy plans for 2011, 79% plan to give the same or more (one in three donors will give more) to charitable causes. She found that the most optimistic donors were those who earned more than $200,000 per year, those with one or more post-secondary degrees, and those who define themselves as “actively religious.”
Since we are always encouraging our clients to build giving relationships with the next generation, the survey response by the younger age range was fascinating to me. An astonishing 39% of those under the age of 35 planned to give more this year, as compared to 20% of older donors.
More good news from Burk’s survey: she found that “among the minority (7%) of donors planning to give less this year — the economy is no longer the deciding factor.”
I encourage you to read Penelope Burk’s entire March 25 blog post and view an excellent three-year comparison chart at http://www.cygresearch.com/burksblog.
